New workout products; you be the judge. With pool season fast approaching, I thought it would be timely to share a few new fitness products that I like. I love sugar and could not believe it when I read about www.sportbeans.com I couldn't believe "Jelly Belly" has gone healthy? These jelly beans taste just as good as the originals and are packed with vitamins B & C and electrolytes and come in fruit punch, berry blue and lemon lime. Thankfully they are pre-packed in 100 calorie bags. $1 for a one-ounce bag. The website says they are available at Target, if you find them somewhere else let us know! I know it's a stretch, but if I can eat Jelly Belly's in lieu of drinking Gatorade that works for me! I am hopeful to get back into my walking and running regime. I am interested in a new Sports Bra lines, Vapor sports bras by Champion, that are made from activate carbon and coconut derivatives which keep moisture and odor away, cools your body and shields from UV rays. Who knew coconut could be so cool and comfortable? They are pricey at $40 each, but I have decided if I actually stick to my new exercises regime for 2 weeks, I am going to reward myself! I hit some area garage sales with my 4 year-old thanks to our helpful list of neighborhood garage sales that you our readers have submitted! It's quite a list. We spent $4 and got a bag full of books and little toys to keep my young ones busy. One man's trash is another man's treasure indeed. Great Birthday Gift for a Friend: This gift idea applies to any age; a real treat! I want to thank my friend Amy for giving our 4 year-old the best birthday present ever; time with her friend!
She received a lovely card that invited her to lunch, wearing princess attire of her choice, and followed by an ice cream treat. What was originally going to be a Tea Thyme style lunch and Baskin Robbins treat turned into Subway followed by a trip to DEALS to pick out a few dollars of "treasures!" It was such a wonderful outing for her, and for me, I got a few hours to myself to multi-task! Thank you Amy for this VERY thoughtful gift! Time together truly is the best gift of all! My sister did the same thing for my birthday; she took my youngest for some quality time with auntie while I had some time to myself.

Kindness Flowers Springfield Moms Series Editor Jen Dillman alerted us to “Kindness Flowers.” Not for kids only! Jen writes: “At my daughter’s preschool, they have kindness flowers to recognize when they are kind to each other. One day, my daughter received one for playing nicely with her friend. That evening I was with a group of adults and decided to recognize a colleague for his kind act to me – giving a kindness flower of my own (although I didn’t make the comparison until the next day). Unfortunately, unlike preschool where the kids give each other a high five, a pat on the back, and a way to go, my peers made a joke and laughed. It made me realize that sometimes we can all use a reminder of the basic lessons we learned in preschool.”

Priorities: I was out yesterday spending the day with my youngest for one of her IV medical treatments where we spend the day at St. John's Children's Hospital. Our family knows first-hand the challenges that a chronic medical condition brings. Nobody likes it when their kids don't feel well; that is a fact we can all agree upon. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces on the pediatric floor. For those of you who haven't needed the services at SJCH yet, just knowing that we have first-class care and over 50 pediatric specialties (and it's growing!) right her in our backyard. You are in good hands. One of the blessings of these treatment days is the quality time we get together; we read, color, watch her favorite shows and always find some reasons to laugh despite the reason we are there. My family and friends have been such an amazing support system through all of it! Life stops for awhile when our kids are down, and then we all pick our chins up and move forward.

Happy Mother's Day to all of our readers. I enjoyed a morning filled with homemade cards and special crafts made just for Mom at school. There is truly no better gift for a mom than something created by her child! I love them! Dad took over morning duties so I could sleep in and drink my coffee while it was still warm! We had a wonderful brunch with my mom, my sister and their family. I had planned to spend the afternoon going to the Parade of Homes (cancelled today due to the nasty weather) and doing some shopping, but I traded all of that for a quality nap! Two hours later, I was rejuvenated!
A funny quote from a friend of mine: "I am not my mother, therefore, I am." As I get older (and wiser,) I find more ways that my mom and I share similarities even though we are also quite different. The most common bond we share today is wanting to be with our families and cherishing nothing more than what they bring to our life. Cheers to you Moms!! Dads, we are excited o celebrate you in June!

The week is racing on despite wanting extra time to catch up! I know you all can relate. I have tried sprinkling pepper around the windows to get rid of the ants, and it IS making a difference! Tonight we had a meeting for our preschool which means a large group of the moms found an excuse to get out of the bedtime routine at home and go out for a late dinner!
I just came home and both girls are asleep, and the house is restful. Of course, the dogs immediately begged me for food and attention; those puppy dog eyes!
I have emails in my inbox from several of our readers who are also on their computers late at night, which makes me feel normal!

Oliver the pig came to visit in honor of our successful Junior Heroes Campaign. Peter Tosh and Jenny Rich from the American Red Cross arrived with Oliver in his little crate; he looked a bit nervous and smelled, well, stinky! But, he was adorable, just like Wilbur and the kids loved him! The kiss left some pig hair in my lip gloss, but it was all for fun and to celebrate a FUN event. Peter reported that they responded to 10 house fires in the past few weeks alone where kids were involved! This is exactly why we chose to help out this campaign! Ants! If anyone has a good trick for how to keep ants from climbing in my kitchen window again and again, please let me know! I have heard shaking Borax (laundry detergent) on the window sill. Clean Slate Today, Sunday, was filled with chores, laundry, lawn work and other domestic "bliss" items. But, at least I can start of the week with empty hampers. I'll be heading to the grocery store around 10:00 p.m., and I am never surprised at how many other moms and dads I see at this hour getting the basics. "Oliver" the pig is coming to my house on Tuesday so I can give seal our $1585 donation to the Junior Heroes Campaign with a kiss! My kids are so excited, they wanted to watch Charlotte's Web the DVD version one more time before he comes over! Again, I am so grateful to our campaign sponsors, team leaders and media support for this important campaign. If you haven't ever attended the Local Heroes breakfast put on by the American Red Cross, you can get a glimpse here. It's a very inspiring event.

It's been an intense and busy work week, and I am exhausted! You know those days where you feel like you are going backwards in your to do list? I just lost two hours of work due to a computer glitch, and I am leaving in one hour to the hospital for a medical procedure! UGH! So, I will start fresh and redo that project tomorrow and am actually looking forward to my nap and anesthesia! I think that is a real sign of TGIF! Spring Cleaning I did the nasty refrigerator clean-out this week-- removing all shelves and drawers, cleaning them spotless; so at least for one day, our refrigerator looks brand new, and you can see everything in it! I have avoided a massive stock pile grocery run; I don't want to mess it up! Being a mom that truly doesn't enjoy cooking in the kitchen, you will see my refrigerator is full of condiments which amounts to a whole bunch of nothing! I got rid of a bunch and made room for the soon to be bounty of fresh and local produce coming to the Downtown Springfield Farmer's Market which opens in a preview day May 14th and regular market on May 21st. I can make a salad and serve fruit!
Dining Out: Speaking of not cooking, although Culver's doesn't have a kids eat free night that we LOVE to feature on our website, I do think it's a good value for their kiddie meal. For about $4 in addition to the standard "entree", they offer applesauce or fries , milk or soft drink and who can resist the custard at the end. They even let adults order kids meals with no guilt! My favorite kids eat free location is either Sunday's at Xochilmilco OR Tuesday nights are Perkins (breakfast items at dinner is always fun and they still have the clown come by!)

fellow reader suggested we rent "Gracie" a movie about a teenager girl who
wants to play soccer on the varsity boys squad. It's produced by
Andrew Shue (for those of us who watched Melrose Place in the 80's) and
based on his sister Elisabeth Shue who watched Andrew play and was inspired
to follow him. I Again, it's PG-13, so watch for lots of teenage
hormones and some rebellious scenes, but overall it is very inspiring for

Snow?! Jen Dillman and I were downtown yesterday when the rain turned into a two-minute snow-storm yesterday! It left us speechless! At home, our family is enjoying watching a robin build a bird nest on top of a drain pipe right outside our kitchen window. We saw him stuff the first piece in and have been checking on it ever since. We are very hopeful all goes well with the full nest construction so we can watch the mother and babies to follow.

I am amazed at the variety of camp offerings available! Hope you can all find something you are interested in. TV Turn off week lessons learned Springfield Moms contributor Julie Kaiser and her family completed the TV Turn-Off challenge but it came down to the wire in a close finish: "I really had my doubts on Friday morning when I had a house to clean, work deadlines looming, and my 3-year-old was hanging off my leg wanting my complete and undivided attention," Julie admitted. "But she decided to go check on her pet turtle she and her brother had found earlier in the week when they played outside for hours and hours, and I resisted the temptation to let National TV Turn-Off Week crash and burn. We created an Ice Cream Sundae-Fest to reward the kids (and ourselves!) after it was all over. All in all -- a valuable experiment!"
Now my turn! Our family fared pretty well. My two young daughters and I held firm from Sunday-Friday (Dad dropped out early but watched after the kids were asleep. ) But by day 6 on Saturday I was feeling quite behind, and I broke down and let them watch a DVD, Flipper, while I caught up in the office. I think they needed some quiet time and I did too! But we did have 6 days without TV, and it was a good lesson for our family in being conscious of not choosing the TV as the first way to start the day or to unwind. I enjoyed hearing the girls spend hours playing with barbies, polly pockets and we painted a lot of seashells from our recent vacation!

My daughter brought home pock rock candy from a birthday party recently. I sneaked some when she wasn't looking for two reasons. 1. I love anything sugary! 2. Nostalgia!
I am dating myself, but those of us who were very young in the 70's, remember the rumor that Mikey (the boy from the Life cereal commercial "He likes it, hey mikey!") had his stomach "blow up" because he drank soda with his pop rocks. I hope some of you are laughing and nodding out there. It's amazing how some of those crazy rumors last over time. If anyone googles him and finds out if Mikey is still alive, you will be entered in our May prize drawing! As always any tips or resource submissions get your name entered!

We had a great time at Family Safety Day today! We met a lot of new readers and current readers. All of the kids looked great in their new, free bike helmets! Thanks to Allison Klint for creating our bike safety quiz and making sure we had fun stickers and informative handouts for families. I was in for a treat this week, as I tried the Reflexology treatment at Lift & Firm. Suzi, the reflexologist, has done this for 40 years, and you will learn so much about your body during this treatment!

On the home front, I am continually challenged with the challenges of working from home! The workload and piles of to do items are always just around the corner. I am learning to CLOSE my door to really get away and continue to try not to abuse the "no computer" from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. rule I set for myself (but my kids have caught me several times!) No matter what your schedule is, I know we all struggle with the good ole "so much to do, so little time." The goal of our website is to SAVE you time overall! We have done so much for the research and prep work for you on as many resources as we can gather! We continue to expand. Thanks for your loyal support. Day 3 on TV Turn off week! My husband has bailed out, but the kids and I are hanging tough! The sign on the TV says, play outside, read or create, no TV!
High School families! The ALPLM's Summer Scholars program will run 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every weekday from July 28 to August 8. Students will work with educators, visit historic sites and attend workshops led by historians, multi-media professionals and museum staff and will design a Web site commemorating the 1908 Springfield race riot. To apply, students must be entering sophomore, junior or senior year next fall or have graduated from high school this year. Clean-up time! After school yesterday, my inspired kindergartener came home and wanted to walk the neighborhood and collect bags of trash in honor of earth day! We easily filled 3 bags in just a few blocks--!

Thanks to Amy Marx for this tip for those with the younger age kids. "One of the best parenting tips my husband & I use with our 2 1/2 year old daughter is giving her choices. We started by giving her 2 choices, mainly in tough situations for a child, such as peas or corn! By having a choice she feels more in control of the issue at hand!"

Ready for a challenge? Starting today, our family is taking the National TV Turn-Off Week Challenge (www.screentime.org) from April 21 - April 27th. Wow. No television for a week. Just thinking about it makes me nervous. Yet, I choose to do this because I want my kids to understand that TV is not the best use of our time. Yes, I sometimes use TV as a handy "babysitter" so I can make dinner or catch up on phone calls. But now that spring is here, it's the perfect time to have them use more creative energy outside, or stay in and express themselves on paper, read a book and just play! I will update my blog and let you know how it goes! If your family takes the challenge, email me and share your feedback!

A great tip from Terra McParland that she used when her kids were younger. “To try to discourage a particularly bad habit or bad behavior (i.e., not stopping when I say stop, or biting fingernails) we have a treasure box. I fill it with slips of paper with simple (mostly no cost or small cost) items. After they can go 10 days without doing their habit or bad behavior, they get to pick from the treasure chest. I liked the idea of rewarding the child for good behavior instead of punishing them when I caught them in bad situations. The items included: pick a movie to watch, pick the family game for game night, have a friend spend the night, pick the dinner or dessert, special hugs and kisses for a day. The list goes on, and they helped me pick items to include. My favorite part was that they all especially wanted the special hugs and kisses for a day. Now my twins are 10 and my youngest is 6, and we don't use this on a daily basis. However, whenever we need to focus on a particular behavior, we pull it out and it provides incentive for them to succeed. In fact, when we pull it out for one child, the other two frantically try to think of something they need to work on so they can participate. I highly recommend it."
Since our family is doing the national TV Turnoff week, I think it's a great time for us to start that treasure chest!

I am "recovering" from a wonderful vacation with the kids, which means I am buried in laundry, have an empty refrigerator, and an overflowing inbox! But, it was all worth it , and we have lots of fun memories from our trip to visit my parents in Florida. I carried two books to read on vacation, but never cracked one. Vacation with young kids doesn't allow a lot of downtime.! People looked (and laughed) as they saw our cart FULL of luggage and booster seats meandering through the airport. Traveling iwas an adventure as always! Our youngest said, "mommy, I have to go potty" as soon as the airplane took off and they wouldn't let you out of your seat. We're safely home and have boxes of seashells to remember our fun times.

In November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln was invited to say “a few
appropriate remarks” to dedicate a cemetery in rural Pennsylvania, the final
resting place for more than 50,000 Americans who gave their lives during the
Civil War. Facing a divided nation, Lincoln expressed in less
than 300 words that from this terrible sacrifice “this nation, under God,
shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by
the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address became one of our nation’s most revered
speeches. Today, the nation is again divided and at war. Imagine yourself in
Lincoln’s place. What would you say to your fellow citizens to unite the
country? In 300 words or less, tell what your ideals are for a nation of
freedom, democracy and equal opportunity.
COMPETITION LEVELS

AWARDS
The Illinois Center for the Book will select a first-, second- and
third-place winning essay in each of the three competition levels. The
Illinois State Library will send the winners
and their parents/guardians to Springfield for an awards presentation in
conjunction with the bicentennial celebration of Lincoln’s birthday. Winners
will read their essays at
the awards ceremony, tour the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and
receive a plaque and cash award: $200 first-place; $150 second-place; $100
third-place.
Winning essays also will be published in the 2009 Handbook of Illinois
Government.
DEADLINE Submit essays by May 31, 2008. Winners will be notified in

I was on the Family Forum last night and saw a reader asking for a place for
a romantic getaway. Even if it's not romantic, don't we all need a
getaway! Whether you grab your friends, your spouse or your significant other,
I can highly recommend going to the Sainte
Genevieve area in Missouri. It's about an hour
and a half south of St. Louis, and it's a charming B & B town with a taste
of Napa Valley as well. I am not kidding here, although Napa is hard to
compete with , we were pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the wineries in

I was away from my computer for 4 days-- what a treat! I am now paying the price with a mound of email and work follow-up to get to this week! We had a fun family weekend, first at the Children's Discovery Museum in Normal and then up to Chicago to see a friend and attend a medical conference to learn more about things we can do to help our 4 year-old Vanessa. We had a good time up there despite the cold and rain, but the dramatic ending makes for a good laugh (well, now it does, but not at the time!) Our back windshield shattered just before we were heading home, so my husband graciously traded cars with me and HE drove home in the noisy, plastic on the back, windy, cold car! The girls and I were warm and cozy in our other. Thankfully, we had met in Chicago from two separate locations so we had this option!

It was time for our two dogs to have their annual check-up. This means two things: a big charge on our credit card and a whirlwind of dog nerves at our house! I made the huge mistake of taking my two young daughters with me thinking it would be good for them to see what the vet is all about. Whoops! The dogs were wild and pulling on their leashes, whining and drooling all over the reception area; their combined body weight is 135 pounds, so I can barely hold them! Once we were settled in the room, the girls were getting worried about the dog shots and blood tests, and the dogs just continued their shaking, shedding and whines! This went on during our entire visit, and I kept thinking "get me out of here!" I guess the old saying "Live and Learn" applied to me today! If you haven't already taken your four-legged family members to Stuart Park, that is a place everyone can relax and have fun! More on our Pet Corner page!

Comedy Break: I just took a break and watched taped episodes of the sitcom "The Office." Even though I work from home (and have for most of my career), I reflect upon my time working in the corporate office and seeing so much potential for a sitcom spinoff! Whether it's reading the comic strip Dilbert or watching The Office; the true benefit is just an escape into laughter.
It has nothing to do with parenting or child-rearing in any way, and sometimes, that too can be a "good thing!" If you haven't already read about my other TV vice, it's Cashmere Mafia.
I wrote a column comparing the Cashmere Mafia lifestyle to my Real Life as a Working Mom. Enjoy and hope it brings a laugh!

For those of that stay local for spring break, it’s a great time to rediscover what we have available right around us.
I just spoke to a reporter at the SJR with some ideas for what to do locally; hope this helps!
Day Trips- we have some great day trip options within a one hour drive. We're heading to the Children’s Discovery Museum. Or, visit Allerton park for a beautiful day of walking and relaxation and a picnice lunch.
Parks Directory- check out a new playground or park, send us your comments on what you like best.
Library- visit your local library and have everyone (including the parents) pick out a new book or two and read at home. Better yet, linger at the library and read before you get home!
Check our what’s happening calendar for Storytimes and a fun Junie B Jones event at Williamsville Public Library on Saturday March 29th.
Your own neighborhood- Sidewalk chalk, bike rides and taking time to talk to some of your neighbors.
Community project- pick a charity of your choice and call and ask for their Wish List of supplies, shop as a family and deliver them in person.
Website Watch- allow for monitored time online… 15 minutes for game sites and 15 minutes on an educational site.
Whatever you do, hopefully you will find some "break" time in your spring break!

Our house is covered in plastic eggs, an excess of candy and chocolate, and that annoying easter grass is stuck in the carpet throughout! All in the spirit of making fun memories of course. Is that gold? My kindergarten comes home from school with lots of quotables everyday, but after her St. Patrick's Day celebration at school Amanda "McLittle" was full of pure joy! "Mom, there was a mess in the classroom that a leprechaun made! We found bags of gold that the sneaky leprechaun had left behind." I mean, it just does not get any better than that! I shoved my pile of bills and laundry to the side and was happy to imagine a leprechaun leaving gold around our house!

Spring IS coming, for real! This morning while waiting for the bus, my daughter came running inside- "Mom you have to see this! It's a little flower coming through (the ground.)" Then later, after school, "Mom, guess what? Actually, I saw a fly today at recess!" Still dressed in her winter coat, it was such a moment of excitement and zapped me into a great mood. I wish we never lost the excitement for ALL of the small wonders of our lives!

I turned 37 today! Just older, greyer (hair that is, but fixable by my hair stylist!) and wiser, but my kids hand-made cards and a "book" from my oldest made my day! I still love birthday cake as much as I did when I was younger, and my husband made it from scratch (actually a box mix, but I don't care!) I always want the corner piece or the piece with the rose (the most icing!) Some things never change!

When shopping for your kids and extended families kids: Skip giving yet another toy (no recall worries or extra clutter) and ask family members to help fund some new activities for you and the kids. Art, golf, music, crafts, karate, etc. Gift certificates or cash to apply towards a new hobby or outing is a wonderful gift and very useful for a family budget! A few of my friends have come up with other creative gifts that are useful and don't add to the toy box clutter. A date at the movies with a friend, tickets to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, or lunch at Tea Thyme for the younger girls in full princess dress attire! It’s been one of those weeks! The basement flooded, my car needed all new tires, both kids had doctor visits, the dogs pooped in the living room, and I spent hours looking for my daughter’s ear drops only to find out the next morning that she had hid them from me! Parenthood is anything but glamorous, but tomorrow is a new day! So, I’m thinking it’s time to escape to Jazz’s Soda Fountain and Bed Breakfast. Need a Change of Scenery ... Pronto? Take your kids on a road trip down to Lebanon, Illinois, just an hour and twenty minutes south of Springfield. There is a nice little two block shopping district complete with Dr. Jazz Soda Fountain and Grille, which offers the oldest working soda fountain in the United States. The food is great; the atmosphere is authentic and the whole place is just fun. Springfield Moms volunteer Julie Kaiser just returned from a weekend get-away at the Dr. Jazz Bed and Breakfast, which is located upstairs from the restaurant. Julie raved about the rooms, the breakfasts and the "Soda Jerk School" where she and her husband donned aprons and learned how to make old fashioned soda drinks and sundaes. Lebanon is only thirty minutes from downtown St. Louis making this a great place to stop with your kids for lunch or dinner on the way to the zoo or City Museum. My youngest turned 4 today so there is a lot of excitement around our house! When she grows up she wants to be a cowgirl, a firefighter and a doctor! My treat to myself was finally going to the doctor to take get a check-up! It had been a long time; we all know that moms are best at taking care of others first, and then ourselves! Now that I am older (and wiser?) I am realizing how important it is to prioritize things that I need as well. Also, I have continued to take a "Clean Sweep" through our house (see Feb 6th) to eliminate the unneeded and items that are cluttering up our lives. It continues to be exhilarating! Our prayers of comfort and healing go out to anyone and everyone affected by the shootings at Northern Illinois University. I don't know how parents move on from such unexpected life happenings, but I do know that those that have experienced such a loss can and do band together in support. There is a local group working to get an Angel of Hope Statue mounted in a local park to commemorate the loss of child. More to come on our website.

Youth Writing Contest Students in Grades K-12 have the chance to win savings bonds for education. A Clean Sweep at my house! I am reading Peter Walsh's book It's all too much, and I love it! You might recognize his name from TLC's Clean Sweep. I have gone through 4 major rooms of our home and filled the car with items to donate and recycled or trashed other items. It's been liberating! Goodwill has closed their Monroe/Lawrence and their Wabash store and are re-opening a new huge on in the old K's Merchandise Mart. I made my huge drop-off on Sunday and the worker kept saying, all of this goes? YES! I donated lots of clothing and toys to Sojourn's shelter as well because I like to know that women victims of domestic violence are getting those items directly. Wherever you take your things....enjoy the feeling of less is MORE! Now, back to the kitchen with boxes and bags in hand!
