Teen Reading Contest at Chatham Area Public Library

Ah, summer! Sunshine, sleeping late, hanging with friends, winning prizes … that’s right, winning prizes! Now that summer is here, it’s time to slow down, relax and reap the rewards of all your hard work during the school year. The Chatham Area Public Library again invites all teens 7th-grade through high school to enter our “Reading Rewards!” drawings beginning June 9th and continuing through August 15th. Winning is easy and the rewards are SWEET: weekly gift certificates to places such as Kerasotes Theatres, Knights Action Park, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Family Video and more. One lucky reader will even be rewarded with the grand prize of a $50.00 gift certificate to Best Buy!

Simply sign up at the Library, then enter your name for a chance to win each time you read a book. And here’s the beauty of it—read whatever you want to read! So forget assigned reading and textbooks this summer. Remember what it’s like to read a book for fun--and prizes! What could be easier … or sweeter? Questions? Call the Library at 483-2713.

Decatur Public Library

130 N. Franklin St. Decatur, (217) 424-2900 ext. 5, kgross@decatur.lib.il.us

The Decatur Public Library’s summer reading program, Get in the Game, READ!  starts Monday June 2.  In the Children’s Department, any child with a DPL card (or in the care of an adult with a DPL card) can sign up, set a reading goal for a week’s worth of reading or listening, pick up a reading log, check out some books, and get going!  The summer reading desk is ready for action whenever the library and bookmobiles are open.  Sign up during the first three weeks of the program and your name will go in a drawing for “Get in the Game” t-shirts or duffel bags, so don’t delay!

Each time readers complete a goal they get a reward.  Thanks to a generous grant from Target, one of the rewards will be a ticket for a performance of “The Legend of Little Wolf” a Madcap Puppets Production, on Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m., or Friday, July 18 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.  Thanks to the Friends of Decatur Public Library, the final reward for those completing the program will be a prize paperback book.

The library will award prize books to the five elementary schools with the highest percentage of students completing the program, so finish the program, and make your school a winner!

Friday, June 20 Magician Rick Eugene will be giving a magic show.

Watch for information about other summer activities and story times to be posted on the children's page of the library website, www.decatur.lib.il.us/childrens/childrens.htm

Children who are not yet reading independently are encouraged to participate in the summer program by listening to stories, which is the best preparation for learning to read!  Kids who read for pleasure during the summer improve their reading skills the fun way – with no tests or work sheets.  Those who don't read during the summer tend to lose skills, and fall behind.  So put library visits on your summer schedule, and Get in the Game, READ!
