“Blackened” Waffles represent Love!

Every Mother’s Day just seems to get better.  I think it may be because I’m more experienced as a mom (ten years now), so I’m able to relax more and really savor the day that honors the love and commitment to our children that we all provide every day.

I had one rule on Mother’s Day.  Please don’t wake me before 8:30 a.m.  Sleep (uninterrupted) is the gift that keeps on giving in my opinion!  So I was awake around 8:00 a.m., but I stayed in my room to read and relax, while I heard the girls scurrying around the kitchen, letting the dog in and out, and planning their thoughtful treat for mom (breakfast in bed!).

Uh-oh!  I smelled something, a burning sort of smell!   So I left my room to investigate.  I found one daughter madly scraping a plate in the sink and the other saying “ooops mommy, we burned the waffles!”  The frozen waffles had been “cooked” in the microwave for five minutes and the result was exhibit A (see photo).

Plan B, the girls had moved the new frozen waffles into the toaster oven, but there was a bit of fear of dealing with the hot tray in there, so I took that part over.

Once the waffles were out, I disappeared to my room to let them finish their work.  Exhibit B is the end result!  A beautiful, creative display of waffles with the message HI! spelled out in blueberries and syrup smile a greek yogurt parfait with bananas and blueberries, coffee and a bowl of cereal.  WOW!  What a treat.  This was paired with adorable home made cards and big smiles and hugs from both.

This morning is one I will never forget.  Not just the burned waffle part, but how they were problem solving on their own!  It’s yet another sign that they are growing up and moving forward in the path towards independence.   Most of all, they know how to make someone feel special, and if that’s all they learn from me, I am one proud mom!

Do share your favorite mother’s day or any special moments that you savor; it’s what makes the journey of parenthood one that I feel honored to pursue!
